A Look at MTV’s 2015 VMA Green Screen Bait

By Daniel Turk | August 27, 2015

When it was announced that the 2015 MTV Video Music Awards were approaching, being the CR8+!V3 conceptor that I am, I naturally looked at the graphics to see what this year’s theme was.

MTV is known for pushing their creativity to new heights year after year – especially when it comes to its Video Music Awards (VMAs). One of my favorite VMA creative campaigns was in 2013 when international artist and provocateur, KAWS reinvented the award show’s staple piece of creative, the Moonman award. MTV took a huge risk to be innovative with their iconic statue, and it went over great with fans.

Now, if you watch TV at all, you may have seen a few ads with Miley Cyrus flying through psychedelic sinkholes, standing in a pool full of dolphins, making weird faces, or riding a kitty cat. If these commercials have left you annoyed and/or confused…allow me to explain why these are actually super neat.

When I first took a look at the 2015 campaign design on the VMA website, I found tons of celebrity videos and pictures with just a green screen as the background and my eyes immediately lit up like a kid in a candy store. When any graphic designer or visual artist sees a green screen, it instantly tells us “Please create something here.”

MTV has basically put out a call for artists all over the world to be a part of their user-generated promotional creative. In a nutshell, it’s asking people to do free promotion for the VMAs, and as an artist, I am okay with that.

The 2015 VMA website has downloadable billboards, stickers, and backgrounds, as well as photos of this year’s host, Miley Cyrus (spoiler alert: fans really had fun with her green screen images). Pharrell Williams, Taylor Swift, Tori Kelly, Ed Sheeran, Mark Ronson, Nick Jonas, The Weeknd and A$Ap Rocky were also options for fans to choose from.

As you can see, I took at stab at it with an image of Pharrell and had a blast! My final product is the header image of the blog post. The coolest part is, MTV will be using these user-generated graphics all throughout the show. It’s genius!
